Obeying God rather than men ...
Most people know the quote from the book of Esther where Mordecai is trying to convince Esther to intercede on behalf of the Jews because the wicked official in the king's court, Haman, is trying to have all the Jews exterminated. “The Six Marks of a Disciple of Jesus Christ”
Jesus summarized the commandments in Matthew 22:37-39, using the words of Moses from Deuteronomy 6:5: “‘Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Then He added in verse 40: “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Shortly before He ascended into heaven Jesus gave to the disciples what we have called, “The Great Commission.” In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
It stands to reason, then, that the marks of a disciple of Jesus should arise out of these commands of Christ. Desiring to be obedient to all that God commands and finding in the words of Jesus God’s priorities for the lives of His people, we examine six marks of a true disciple of Christ. While not an exhaustive list, the six marks point to the necessity for a living, dynamic relationship with God through Jesus Christ and His Spirit which then produces a fruitful relationship with other disciples in order to fulfill God’s purposes. The goal, as always, is to make God known and to bring Him glory.
