“WE EXIST TO PROCLAIM THE REIGN OF JESUS CHRIST OVER ALL THINGS; GLORIFYING AND ENJOYING GOD, NOW AND FOREVER!”

1 – “The Only Way to Resist Idolatry”

When the word idolatry is mentioned most of us have images of primitive people bowing down to statues or shrines. Unfortunately, it is this incomplete perception of idolatry that causes modern people to be unaware of, or in some cases to overlook, the idols of their heart. Far from being an ancient problem, idolatry is still a problem in our modern technologically advanced society today. Sometimes we as Christians might assume we have no idols in our heart, after all the Lord is our God. But in Colossians 3:5 Paul writes these words to a body of believers: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” With these words the Apostle exposes a significant truth: covetousness is idolatry. And why is this? It is because it reveals a discontentment with God. We are covetous because God is not enough for us. To be discontent with God is to fail to treasure Him and pursue Him more than the things of this world. Simply put: idolatry is when we treasure, trust, or thirst for something or someone more than God. But how does this happen? Why do we have this tendency toward idolatry, and how do we escape it’s bondage and tragic consequences? How can it be resisted? Judges 2 has answers.
