“WE EXIST TO PROCLAIM THE REIGN OF JESUS CHRIST OVER ALL THINGS; GLORIFYING AND ENJOYING GOD, NOW AND FOREVER!”

13 – “Be Controlled by the Spirit!”

Stand Alone Sermon

Salvation is transforming (2 Cor. 5:17; Eph. 2:8-10), and transformation (new birth) produces a new life in which the power of sin has been broken. Paul wrote in Titus 2:11-14 that salvation manifests itself in a believer’s life as a turning away from ungodliness and worldly passions, to live self- controlled, upright, and godly lives. Ephesians 5:18, in light of God’s will for us to grow in the likeness of Christ (Rom. 8:29) and His command to us to mortify the sin in our lives and to put on the new self (Eph. 4:22-24), defines the responsibility, that we, as believers, have in our ongoing sanctification. To “be filled with the Spirit” is not optional for a believer in Jesus Christ, it is a command. Apart from being filled with the Spirit a believer cannot grow in Christlikeness. It is a constant, moment by moment, daily way of life, the continual controlling influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives through the Word. Being filled with the Spirit is not an event, not a euphoric or ecstatic state, it is not a second anointing of the Spirit. To be “filled with the Holy Spirit”, is to yield, through the Word of Christ, to the dominating influence of the Spirit in EVERY part of our lives; our thoughts, our motives, our passions, and our wills. It is the means in which our God does His good work in us. (Phil. 1:6)
