Moral impurity is a major problem in our society, but this is not something new: throughout history mankind has always perverted and misused God’s good gift of sex. Paul’s list of the works of the flesh begins with sexual sins (cf. Galatians 5:19) and in 1 Thessalonians 4:3 he reminds us that sexual sin is against God’s will. But in a society where temptations to such sin abound, what are Christians to do? Is moral impurity a hopeless endeavor? Is it something Christian men and women pursue in futility? By God’s grace it is not a hopeless pursuit! The Psalmist writes, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.” (Psalm 119:9) There are numerous passages of Scripture that deal with the matter of purity (e.g. Proverbs 5:18-19; Matthew 5:27-30; 1 Corinthians 6:15-20; Galatians 5:16-26; Ephesians 5:1-8; James 1:14-15) and affirm it is possible, by God’s Word and by His grace in Christ, to live a morally pure life! In Psalm 119:11 the Psalmist writes, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” When the Word of God is stored up — or treasured — in our hearts it has a sanctifying power because of Christ. In Genesis 39 we have a powerful example of sexual temptation and a young man who successfully resisted. There are many principles from this passage that, if we will apply, will enable us to guard our lives against impurity for the glory of God and for our own good!
