God teaches us who are by grace His people to conduct ourselves in this world as citizens of His kingdom. As disciples of Jesus Christ we live IN this world, but we are not OF this world. That sometimes leaves us in a place of tension, a place where we must make a choice whether to obey God or men. We are living in the middle of that tension today. Others, in places all over the world, have to make this choice every day, but we have been blessed up until now to have the freedom to speak and to act according to God’s Word with very few restrictions put upon us. In recent years that has been slowly changing and now, suddenly, we are being confronted with the reality of having to choose between obeying God or man and it is confusing to many because God tells us in His Word to submit to those who rule over us. What are the issues that are at stake? Where are we being told that we can’t do what God calls us to do as Christians? Is there a line that has been Crossed? Is there a point at which Christians cannot and should not submit to the decrees of the government? If so, where is that line? All of this sounds like mixing religion and politics. Here’s the truth: Politics cannot rule over religion, but God’s truth speaks to every area of life and government has only the authority that God gives it.“No Authority Exists Except What God Has Established” does not mean government has sovereign authority…it means they answer to God. May God give us wisdom to discern His truth and to rightly apply it today to every area of our lives…including our current situation!
