“WE EXIST TO PROCLAIM THE REIGN OF JESUS CHRIST OVER ALL THINGS; GLORIFYING AND ENJOYING GOD, NOW AND FOREVER!”

3 – “The Purpose of the Law”

What was God’s purpose in giving the law, and how should Christians relate to it? In Romans 6:14 Paul explains that “… sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Four chapters later he writes, “… Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” (Romans 10:4) It sounds like the law is something that has been done away with, something that has no bearing on our lives today. However, in the Psalms, the law is praised as something of immeasurable value. For example, Psalm 1 teaches that the blessed man delights in the law of the LORD and that he meditates on it constantly (cf. also Psalm 119:97). In Psalm 19:7a we read, “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;” Clearly the law is very good, and while Paul says we are not under the law, he did agreed that the law is good (cf. Romans 7:12). So how do we put all of this together? The law is good and yet Christians are not under the law. What does this mean? We will find answers in our study this morning!
