THIS Is Eternal Life!

The first and greatest commandment, according to Jesus, is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). We have seen that love for God requires knowledge of God: “This is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). Further, the knowledge of God comes through God’s revelation of Himself in His Word, which the Holy Spirit gives to those who are His people by grace. Jesus said, “ … no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him” (Matthew 11:27). This was the purpose of the pouring out of the Holy Spirit so that we who believe understand that “we have the mind of Christ” (I Corinthians 2:16). The very Spirit of God dwells within us to give us the knowledge of God and to produce the love for God that God Himself desires! All of this leads to an obvious choice for those who are God’s people: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!” (Joshua 24:15). God is at all times and in every way faithful to His people and our response must be exclusive love, worship and devotion to Him. Anything less is idolatry and leads to apostasy. The next generation is counting on us to pass on to them the knowledge of our God and what He has done for us! We must not fail them … or HIM!!
